For 15 years Michelle was a missionary in Cambodia. Her first 13 years, she served with Evangelical Friends Church Southwest as a church planter and evangelist. Then she launched the first mission field for MMW as a Marketplace Missionary in Phnom Penh. During her years of service in Cambodia, she acquired a firm grasp of the Khmer language and cultural competencies that provided her with exceptional skills for Mission-through-Business in that region. She is passionate about youth discipleship and leadership development.
She is currently serving in Haviland Kansas, while seeking her Master’s in Transformational Leadership and Spiritual Formation. She has launched a new enterprise, called Origins: A Divine Coffeehouse, in the downtown area to teach, train, and equip college students using business as a platform for missions. She is also the Missionary in Residence at Barclay College. In this role she will be teaching classes, speaking in Chapel, plus mentoring and discipling the next generation of Gospel Bearers. The role of Marketplace Missionary is moldable to join God where he is at work, and right now, for Michelle, that is in Haviland.Meet our Chief Spiritual Officer – Michelle
One of the critical parts of being a missionary is earning the right to be heard, which allows me to impact people’s lives, by introducing Jesus and the hope he offers. I have come to understand how important it is to deal with the whole person; so I can be available to help nurture the transformation that Jesus calls us into. By creating jobs and having daily interaction, many of life’s situations can be modeled by a Christian and can lead to timely questions and discussions.
Cambodia lacks servant-leader role models. Corruption is the accepted way to do business here. So, how can anyone hope to challenge the system when there are no role models to learn from? Modeling and daily presence are critical to relationship building, because what I have to offer is not religion but a relationship with Jesus Christ.
My passion is people. I use my God given skills, talents and abilities to teach and train job and life skills, while at the same time teaching about Jesus. My desire is to equip our staff to succeed in life. In my role I teach “Firm Foundations” and encourage the other Christian staff members to share their faith, as well as, offering connections to local churches where local Cambodian Christians can take up the role of discipleship.
